Scope & Content |
This section has notes about Freight Operations for 500 class, 800 class, 900 class and 2000 series box cars. [Transcription of the handwritten notes:] When the Interstate Com. Comm. [Interstate Commerce Commission] authorized the T.E. Ry. Co. to handle interstate shipments it was found that new locomotives for the operation would cost $50,000 per unit; as there was no funds and no credit it was necessary to build; the units 800 - 801 - 850 cost less than $10,000 each. The Gen. Elec. Co. advisded us that the equipment we proposed would not prove satisfactory for freight handling, but it (was) that or nothing. the result speaks for itself. W. Silvus [March 1953] It was not unusual to push cars at that time. In fact when we started the Gross gravel pit in 1924, Inez and Eddy were the only double end sidings between Worsham [Stop] and Waco. I have pushed 5 gravel cars and 4 box cars from Inez to Waco (after dark). God was surely with us. C.T.D. [4-13-54] Referring to Express Mot. 500 ---- The electrical equipment was never used. It was kept at Monroe with the thought of building another 900 type, but the war came along, and we lost all the Gasoline Business, so they didn't need any more motors. I talked at length with Mr. Floyd along this line, in regard to building another Motor; I ask why not build the next Frt. Motor along the line or style of the Express Motors, just about 10 Ft. shorter body, with a short vestibule or deck on both ends, a little shorter than the 800 type deck. This would have been a common carrier within itself just as the Express Motors, and would not require a daily inspection as all other Loco[motive]s do. Mr. Floyd listened and said "by golly I think you might have something there" but as time went along they got the Busses on their minds, and a few months later he told me what the future looked like, which would be the end in about 18 months from that time.
