Letter from Jay Moore to Walter Donalson, one page, contained within envelope from Bank One [Letter transcribed] [Heading] 225 W. Cypress, Tobin Hill, San Antonio 12, Texas, 24th January, 1961. [Body] Dear Mr. Donalson, My work on the history of San Antonio transit is progressing very well.--The track map is continually undergoing changes and I am actually amazed by the regular appearance of unknown traction companies in the newspapers of 1888-1901. Thus far I have turned up, in addition to the five largest companies, Prospect Hill Street Railway, Citizens Street Rail Road, South Heights Rapid Transit Company, Highland Park Street Railway (affiliated with Laredo Street Railway), Terrell Wells Rapid Transit, City Street Railway (possibly a holding company), San Antonio Edison (the first merger, most standard gauge lines), and Lakeview Street Railway. And there may be more! --I have also located a number of photographs of the system and I am having negatives made so I can illustrate the item when it is finished. When I have done this I will send you a few prints of the most representative photos. Standard gauge cars on narrow gauge trucks always present an interesting sight. I am now confident that a company were organised to build the interurban from Waco to San Antonio but I am puzzled as to how to locate their charter. --A Central Railway of Texas with headquarters at Austin recieved a charter 13th April, 1910 and did some construction work but never operated. --This appears to be the most likely candidate. The possibility of forming a Texas Division has grown and I have gotten the aid of a former editor of "Electric Railroads," Jim Langan in Tyler. He and I have both signed a petition to the Executive Board of The Electric Railroaders' Association and so far we have gotten one other person to sign: Mr. Donald Walker, 2811 Cole Avenue, Dallas. There are three applicants from San Antonio who have agreed to sign when their memberships are approved. --I would strongly advise membership in the national organisation if you are interested in Electric lines. They have an excellent publication. --The "Division" will get a free "plug" from RAILROAD in their next issue and I am hoping that there will be a good response. Response so far has been good but there is a very limited one. This is mainly because it is impossible to locate interested parties. --I am very optimistic though. My best regards and hopes that this letter finds you in good spirits. --Let me hear from you if you have a chance. -- I shall look forward to it. Yours, Jay Moore [Footer] Walter Donalson, Jr. 7525 Wentworth Avenue, Dallas 25 |
