It was dedicated in 1897, following the laying of its cornerstone the previous year. The monument, designed by Frank Teich, is located in Pioneer Park Cemetery in the Convention Center District of downtown Dallas, Texas (USA), next to the Dallas Convention Center and Pioneer Plaza. The monument was originally located at Old City Park, but was relocated to Pioneer Park in 1961 due to construction on R.L. Thornton Freeway.[6] It is believed to be the city's oldest public sculpture.[5] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Confederate_War_Memorial_(Dallas) Note: Behind and to the right of the monument is the Park Hotel, known earlier as the Majestic Hotel and later as the Ambassador Hotel. The current Ambassador Hotel, in the Cedars neighborhood immediately south of downtown Dallas, Texas, is a six-story stuccoed brick building built in 1905 and remodeled to its current Mediterranean-inspired appearance in 1932. The building opened as the Majestic Hotel and was considered at that time as one of the city’s premier hotels, but soon went into receivership and reopened as the Park Hotel under new owner F.W Boedecker in 1907. Eclipsed by the establishment of luxury hotels in downtown Dallas, such as the 1912 Adolphus, as well as the transition of the Cedars neighborhood from an upscale residential district to an industrial and commercial district. The hotel served long-term and short-term tenants under different owners until its purchase in 1955 and conversion to affordable housing for elderly residents following the innovative plan of developer Charles Lavin. The Ambassador stands as an important local example of a mid-rise commercial building in the Cedars neighborhood and reflects the dramatic transition of south Dallas through the 20th Century. https://www.thc.texas.gov/public/upload/preserve/national_register/draft_nominations/Dallas,%20Ambassador%20Hotel%20NR%20SBR%20draft.pdf |
