Passenger Transport newsclip about the abandonment of Texas Electric Railway Company. [article transcribed] [handwritten in pencil: Passenger Transport May 7/48] [Title] Texas Electric Ry. Co. Planning Abandonment [Subtitle] Asks ICC to O.K. Discontinuance Of Interurban Rail Lines Special To Passenger Transport [article] DALLAS. - The Texas Electric Railway Co. has applied to the Interstate Commerce Commission for permission to abandon its interurban rail lines between Dallas and Waco and Dallas and Denison. They are the last of the interurban lines in this section of the country. Abandonment of the lines was decided upon by the stockholders and board of directors of the company because of the steadily declining passenger receipts and mounting costs of operation. For the past two years, the interurban operations were carried on at a loss and the trend for 1948 continues downward. Texas Electric Bus Lines, a wholly owned subsidiary, has filed with the Railroad Commission of Texas an application for permission to operate bus service between Dallas and Waco. No application has been made for authority to run buses between Dallas and Denison, because there are four major bus lines now serving that territory. 1st Line Opened in 1908 The Texas Traction Co. began operation of a line between Dallas and Sherman in 1908 and in 1911 that company purchased from the Denison & Sherman Railway Co. the line between Sherman and Denison. Southern Traction Co. in 1913 began operation between Dallas and Waco and Dallas and Corsicana. Texas Traction and Southern Traction were merged into Texas Electric Railway in 1917. The latter firm went into receivership in 1931 but was later reorganized as the Texas Electric Railway Co. The Dallas-Corsicana line was abandoned in 1941, but the other lines received a brief "reprieve" as a result of the increased passenger traffic during the war. |
