Public square and principal business streets paved with vitrified brick. Cement sidewalks are being constructed generally throughout the residence section. McKinney is noted for its beautiful homes, high standard of citizenship and large wealth per capita. MELISSA POPULATION 500. Situated in Collin county, seven miles north of McKinney. Is surrounded and supported by one of the best farming sections in the state. Has one bank; three grocery houses; large dealer in poultry and eggs; hardware house; drug store; shoes and gents furnishings; two meat markets; one restaurant; corn mill, operated by current from the "Interurban;" livery stable; blacksmith; grain buyers; dealers in cattle and hogs; two cotton gins, one operated by current from the "Interurban;" four churches. 3,000 bales of cotton ginned annually at Melissa. Is the shipping point for Blue Ridge, Valdasta, Chambliss, Roland and Chambersville. Has just voted $10,000 bonds for public school building. ANNA POPULATION 600. Situated in Collin county, eleven miles north of McKinney. Has one grain elevator; three grain and other warehouses; two cotton gins; one lumber yard; one state bank; one implement and machinery house; two hardware dealers; tin shop; grist mill; two drug stores; three dry goods stores, with general merchandise in connection; two meat markets; two restaurants; one hotel; one barber shop; three blacksmith shops; one newspaper; four churches; new concrete block of five buildings just completed. Has just voted bonds for $14,000.00 school building. Is surrounded by a very rich black land country, well adapted to all kinds of farm products and susceptible to intense cultivation. VAN ALSTYNE POPULATION 3,000. Situated in Grayson county, fifteen miles south of Sherman, in the center of a rich and productive farming country, for which it affords the natural market. Van Alstyne has forty brick business houses; two national banks; two 100,000 bushel grain elevators, one operated by power from the "Interurban;" seven grain warehouses; four cotton gins; oil mill; ice factory; electric light plant, operated by power from the "Interurban;" splendid water-works system, with a never failing supply of artesian water; [cont'd on page 21] -20- TEXAS TRACTION COMPANY.. ...DENISON & SHERMAN RY. CO. _________________________________________________ [cont'd from page 20] a paid fire department; eight churches; the best of schools. Ships annually about 13,000 bales of cotton. Many modern residences have been erected in Van Alstyne, and its up-to-date citizenship has made it a flourishing and prosperous town, and ideal residence location. HOWE POPULATION 1000. Situated in Grayson county, ten miles south of Sherman. Has three grain elevators; three dry goods stores; three grocery stores; three confectioneries; two drug stores; two blacksmith and wagon repair shops; two meat markets; two hardware stores; one bank, capital $30,000.00, surplus and profits $15,000.00; a $15,000.00 public school building, containing all modern appliances and equipment; four churches. Is surrounded by as rich a body of land as can be found in Texas, and is the largest inland grain center in the state. The moral and religious standard of the people of Howe is good. SHERMAN POPULATION 22,000. "The Athens of Texas." The county site of Grayson county. Has six trunk lines of steam railroads, with nine outlets; shops and terminals of the "Frisco" railroad; four flouring mills, with daily capacity of 2,500 bbls; three corn mills, with daily capacity of 1,500 bbls; cotton seed oil mill; three cotton seed oil refineries; two lard compound plants; one cotton mill; two large steam laundries, employing more than 200 people; machine shop; iron and brass foundry; ice plant and cold storage; brick plant; compress; gins; grain elevators; two creameries; planning mill; largest nursery in the South-west; two wholesale grocery houses; two wholesale hardware houses; one general mill supply house; three wholesale lumber yards; one wholesale furniture house; fine retail stores, carrying complete lines of everything for the retail trade; two chemical laboratories; one wholesale drug house; two national banks, and one state bank, with combined deposits of over $3,000,000.00; modern electric light and gas plants; the best and purest water supply of any city in Texas; owns her own waterworks and sewerage system; business section, and part of the residence district, paved with vitrified brick; electric street car lines; many fine brick and stone churches; fine system of public schools; three splendid female colleges, with over 900 young lady students; two splendid educative institutions for boys; first class business college; large union passenger station in course of construction. -21- |
