Scope & Content |
This section includes notes about Freight Operations for 500 class, 800 class, 900 class and 2000 series box cars. [Transcription of the handwritten notes:] Freight Operations Could T. E. [Texas Electric] handle it's five wood box cars (No 2000-2004) over it's own tracks out of Dallas on the North End? * Yes, one at a time on uncouple [?] a trailer between 2 box cars. What was the weight of the T.E. locomotives? * 800 series weighted 50 tons; 900 class, 44 tons; 500 class 38 tons. What were the tonnage ratings of the locomotives? * 800 series, 350-400 tons; 900 class 275 to 300 tons; 500 class, 150 to 175 tons. About how many cars could they handle over the Waco Div? * 18 was the most that I remembr over the whole division. Of course we would handle more for a short distance. I have handled over 1,000 tons with an 800 type for a short distance. I remembr one time bringing a train from Dallas to Waco, 10 cars of gasoline and 3 cars of cotton, 528 tons. Several times I have pulled 380 to 410 tons with 900 and there was nothing unusual to handle 200 or more with 503 or 506. Some of the boys used to say when they would get a heavy load "Wish old Dick was here with his 506" I have handled 5 tall cars many times with a 500 type. Getting back to the speed of different type cars, first passenger and express type cars were exactly the same speed, except they used new wheels on the passenger cars and passed the used ones on down to the express cars, and then next to the trailers. 900 is faster than 800, the difference being in the gears. All cars have 4 100 H.P. motors. C.T.D. [1948] |
