Scope & Content |
This section includes notes about cars 600 and 601 within the 600 series. The notes are handwritten on the back of recycled paper. Note: The 'Hot Shot' run, mentioned below, is when a car or cars are sent out to handle an overflow crowd at some event. [Transcription of the handwritten notes:] Express Trail Cars #600 - #601 There was nothing unusual to handle 200 or more (tons) with 503 or 506. Some of the boys used to say when they would get a heavy load "wish old Dick was here with his 506" C. T. Dickenson (undated) 1948 1st or 2nd 506 An express train, Motor 506 and two trailers were turned over on the M.K.T. crossing at North Yards about 5 years ago. Motor man and Conductor both asleep. C. T. Dickenson 11/14/48 1st or 2nd 506 About 1935 (Hoot) Gibson was killed South of Ennis when 506 and an extra Freight train got together on Corsicana Division C. T. Dickenson 11/28/49 I think the car #6 was changed into baggage car #554 , later #510 (No it was 602 - C. T. D.) W E Sturges 1/13/50 1st or 2nd 506 Hoot Gibson was killed on 506 South of Ennis (?) The car was repaired and put in express service again. About a year later this same 506 was being used as a work extra near Rice, Corsicana Div. While pushing a car of steel some of the steel fell off of the flat car and jammed thru end of 506. One man was killed, perhaps a Mexican man also. 506 carried some of these marks until the final days of operation. About May 1943 this same 506 left Dallas on train #511 about 12:00 midnight, motor man Smithwick, Condr, Frank Dyer. Both men were asleep then they reached M.K.T. crossing North Yard (Hillsboro). 506 and two trailers went through derail [?] and turned over on M.K.T. trucks. A Katy wrecker was called from Waco (Bell Meade) to clean the wreck. 506 was repaired again and on July 30th, 1943 506 was assigned to my Hot Shot run to alternate with mot. 503 which had been on this run for about 8 years. There was no difference in the speed or gear... [cont'd in CP.2006.CL.1-122 ZC] |
