WALTER PERCY DONALSON, JR. was born in Dallas, Texas on May 26, 1907 to Walter P. Donalson, Sr. and Louise Young Donalson, both formerly of San Marcos, Texas. He married Medie P. Kyle of San Marcos, Texas on July 26, 1939 at the First Methodist Church- San Marcos. He attended John H. Reagan Elementary School and graduated from Oak Cliff HS (now W.H. Adamson HS - 1924.) He attended Southern Methodist University (SMU) his freshman year but later graduated from the University of Texas-Austin, earning bachelor degrees of architecture in 1928 and architecture engineering in 1929. He studied European architecture while residing in Fontainebleau, France during the summer of 1929. Subsequently, he attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, studying toward a masters degree in architecture from 1929-1932. When the State of Texas began the licensing of architects, he was one of the very first to secure his license in 1937. During his career (1932-1956), he worked as an architect for many of the well-known architectural firms in Dallas. His first position in Dallas involved work on the pre Texas Centennial art deco building at Fair Park. He also worked in San Diego, CA, designing housing and commercial buildings. He helped to design many of the schools for the DISD, several theaters in downtown Dallas, and other commercial buildings throughout the area. He was involved in one of the major additions to Love Field airport. During WWII, architectural firms that designed base housing in Corpus Christi, Texas for the U.S. Navy and the Army Air Force air bases at Altus and Ardmore, OK employed him. He worked with Johnnie J. Myers to research the history of the interurban for the book 'Texas Electric Railway'. He was given a collection of interurban photos by his friend C. E. DeWoody, also an architect. Both his collection and DeWoody's collection were later given to Johnnie J. Myers. |

His parents, Louise Y. Donalson in 1963 and Walter P. Donalson, Sr. in 1968, preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by a son, James Allen Donalson in 1943 and his spouse, Medie K. Donalson in 1997. Survivors include a son, Walter P. Donalson III and spouse, Barbara of Rockwall, TX. A daughter, Alice D. Woodburn and spouse, William of Ft. Myers, FL; grandchildren Mary L. Donalson of Baton Rouge, LA who is an architect, and Jason C. Woodburn of Ft. Myers, FL. Funeral services will be held 4:00 P.M. Monday at Sparkman/Hillcrest Northwest Hwy. Chapel, Deacon Bonnie Morrill, officiating. Interment San Marcos Cemetery, San Marcos, Texas. |
