Interior View of RPO Passenger Motor 350 |
Date |
bef 1917 |
Description |
Interior view of Texas Electric Railway Post Office (RPO) Car 350. All RPO cars were configured alike; here, the original roof version is in evidence. The cars were rebuilt in 1917 to what is now the roof version found on Passenger Motor 360. Drawing on the success of earlier railway postal efforts, the U.S. Post Office standardized the layout and floor plan of RPO cars, handling most back-end post office processing functions. The postal officer in charge was required to carry a regulation handgun aboard the car to protect against theft and robbery. The overhead bins on the left side of the car are for small packages and the metal rack underneath, along the windows, holds individual mail bags into which letters would be sorted en route to its destination. Money was locked in a cabinet; no metal or steel safes were on board. |
