Title |
J. F. Strickland and First Through Interurban Car from Dallas to Denison |
Date |
1909, April 30 |
Description |
When the Strickland Interests bought control of the Denison and Sherman Railway, through service was inaugurated from Dallas to Denison, April 30, 1909. This is a traditional, ceremonial photograph taken before the interurban car embarked on their first trip carrying investors and members of the respective interurban management team. It shows twenty-one (21) men dressed in dark-colored suits and dark-colored hats standing alongside an interurban rail car. J. F Strickland, fifth from right, wears a derby and stands with both hands in his front pockets. He is flanked by investors; Guy Webb is the motorman standing to Strickland's left. The photograph was taken just outside of downtown Denison. The stockholders inspection trip was a common and important event. Investors who owned stock in the electric rail company would ride in the cars over the line to a specific destination, inspecting the new cars and the newly constructed depots. The president of the company, trustees, and the executive staff would also be on board to answer questions. It was always a festive occation attended by marching bands, photographers, and grand speeches. See: Map 1, Detail 1 |
