Description |
SNAPSHOT: Jack Beall house in Waxahachie. Although none of the titans of the Texas interurban railway network ever achieved the lofty financial and social status fo the great financiers of the East, such as J. P. Morgan, John Astor, and Cornelius Vanderbilt, they were wealthy at their own level and in their communities. At an age in Texas when wealth was manifested by land ownership, the interurban developers built splendid homes for themselves as evidence of their success. Restored to its 19th-century stateliness, the Waxahachie home of James Andrew Beall, born in 1866, is still an imposing sight. Beall taught school and practiced law in Ellis County from 1890 until elected to the Texas Legislature and later to the U.S. Congress (1903-1915). After the death of his friend and business associate James F. Strickland, Beall became president of Texas Electric Railway from 1921 until his death in 1929. See: Map 4, Detail 38 |
