TER Passenger Motor 316 at Monroe Shops |

Description |
Damage appraisal photograph of Passenger Motor 316. This image was taken front on. The car sits on the east tracks next to the Monroe Shops Carbarn. An unidentified work motor sits behind and to the right. The silver anti-climber (ribbed edging above the coupler) and sign box were for this car only. Anti-climbers were originally designed for and fitted to passenger cars. This was because they strengthened the frames so cars didn't telescope in a head-on crash but rode up onto each other and crushed downwards or toppled over. Note: The large painted number on the front of the car, in this case 316, is the equipment number. It was required by the Federal Railroad Administration and the carrier's insurance company. The number in the box above the advertisement (226) is the "block number" or "train number", which was assigned to a slot on the run schedule. If you look at a TE employees timetable, above each run going vertically, is the number assigned to that run. This was the number passenger's looked for when catching a ride.
