Description |
GLASS-PLATE NEGATIVE PRINT: Texas Electric Railway's first buses (1-3) are lined up on the east side of the Monroe Shops Carbarn. Dodge Brothers, Inc. had recently acquired Graham Brothers of Detroit. The buses, thus, had Graham bodies and Dodge chassis. One of the three buses was used for the Hull Street conversion in Denison and the other two for the Mulberry Street conversion in Sherman. They had twenty-one seats and the advertised cost was $3815 each, f.o.b. Detroit. To the rear of the bus is Texas Electric's home-made pile driver. Buses became an integral part of the Texas Electric Railway transportation system by being used on feeder lines and short routes when neither streetcars nor interuban electric railcars would serve the purpose. They were used to stem the competition against the interurban lines and local streetcar lines. They served to complete the transportation that the company had promised to deliver when it was chartered. Although not as comfortable as the electric streetcars and railway cars, they were economical to operate and cost less to purchase at $3,815 apiece rather than the $10,000 plus for a railcar. Bus routes could be changed quickly, and neither tracks nor electrical wires needed to be laid or strung. See: Map 3; Map 8, Detail A |
