McKinney Power Plant |

Description |
SNAPSHOT: Texas Traction Company's Main Power Station; north of McKinney. The plant was equipped with two 1000-kilowatt Curtis steam turbine generating units, supplied by General Electric. Current at 2200 volts, 25 cycles was generated and stepped up to 19,100 volts for transmission. As part of electricity production, the power station used the surrounding lake ay to cool their steam back to water for reuse. There was also a substation with a 300-kilowatt rotary converter which supplied 600 volts DC to the trolley line. Substations were also found in Sherman (Payne), Van Alstyne, Plano and Vickery (Jenkins); all with the same rotary converter. In today's terms, the plant was on State Highway 5, about 1/4 mile north of US 380. There is an electric substation in that location today. The power station had a lake around it to generate the electricity. See: Map 2, Detail: Carbarn Siding |
