Title |
1938 Wreck of Passenger Motor 306 |
Date |
15 Oct 1938 |
Description |
Although labeled as Passenger Motor 306, wrecked near Elm Mott Siding just north of Waco, research of Dallas Morning News articles in 1938 indicate this car was more likely the wreck that occurred on Saturday, 15 October 1938 at 1 p.m. Bluebonnet 306, southbound on the Dallas-Waco line, hit what was reported to be an open switch and "hurtled" into a gasoline car parked on a siding near Fernwood Avenue crossing at Lisbon, in the south Oak Cliff outskirts of Dallas. The gasoline car did not explode. Following the accident, more than 1000 people crowded the streets leading to the scene. The news title in the 10-16-1938 Dallas Morning News, p. 13 read: "14 Hurt When Interurban Hits Freight Car on Siding". The freight car was badly damaged when it rammed the lead car. The lead car, 306, was damaged on both ends; in the front when it hit the gasoline car and in the rear when it was rammed by the trail freight car. Thomas C. Parker, Waco, was motorman of the train, which consisted of a passenger car and a freight car. At the time of the accident, Sam B. Mathis, conductor, was in the freight car. Mathis, an employee of twenty-five years at the time, said it was the first accident he had been involved in. Accidents involving interurban railcars did occur infrequently in proportion to the number of miles traveled. See: Map 8 |
