1958 Edward H. Harriman Medal Memorial [Cotton Belt] presented to H. R. Hardison. The obverse bears the bust of Edward H. Harriman facing a torch to his left. Above are two rosettes with 'Edward H Harriman Memorial Medal' between them. Across the bust is 'Awarded By The American Museum of Safety To'. Under the bust is '1958 Cotton Belt'. The reverse bears a railroad man on tracks near signal, wearing cloak and carrying signal flag and lanterns. Across the figure are the words 'For the Utmost Progress in Safety and Accident Prevention'. Early versions were struck by Tiffany & Co.; later versions by Medallic Art Company. It's unknown where this medal was made. Edward Harriman's widow sponsored this medal in 1913 to encourage the young American railroad industry to pay more attention to the safety of their employees. The American Museum of Safety presented medals in gold, silver and bronze to railroads in three groups of line-haul carriers and a fourth group of switching and terminal companies for attaining the best employee safety records during the preceding year. |
