SNAPSHOT: Dallas Railway and Terminal Company streetcar (unknown number) inbound from Oak Cliff on the Trinity River bridge; view looking west from Young and Jefferson Streets in downtown Dallas. The streetcar is running under the overhead catenary wire structure, used for speeding up the cars over the viaduct. This location, entering the west end of Dallas, saw a lot of different rail traffic. Shown here are the Texas Electric siding interchange connecting Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway (ATSF, also known as the Santa Fe) siding tracks that connected to Union Station mainline tracks. The Santa Fe Interchange entered Dallas, just below today's Trinity River viaduct, on Jefferson (now Record) Street, just across from the Texas Electric Express and Dallas Morning News buildings. The single DR&TC interchange track connected to Texas & Pacific Railway (T&P) tracks at Main Street Crossing, where T&P mainline tracks crossed Dallas Main Street, just north of Exposition Avenue (which went to the State Fairgrounds). After 1916, all passenger steam road trains through downtown Dallas only used Union Station. There were no other depots for them. See: Map 3 |
